All varieties of walnuts are attractive trees which bear masses of long green catkins in spring which slowly turn black. They have pinnate foliage, silvery bark and all parts have a distinctive sweet, aromatic smell. They have been in the country since at least the sixteenth century, possibly since Roman times. They prefer a heavy, moist soil but will thrive in others. Do not plant where late frosts occur. We also sell Common Walnut in our tree section.
Rita is a grafted tree, which is slow growing, reaching a height of 8m (20ft) but with pruning it can be kept smaller. so very much smaller than the Common Walnut. It produces heavy crops of large, tasty, thin shelled nuts from an early age, 3 to 4 years, and these can be picked green when unripe in mid-summer then pickled, or left on the tree where they will ripen, split open and be ready to eat in October, or stored. It is hardy but protect from late frosts when young. Crops well when young and because of its ultimate size is suitable as a garden variety.
Walnut, Rita is available as:
Br = Bare Root Plant
Bare-Root Plants
Bare-root plants are sold without a pot/soil around the roots. This is a more cost effective and environmentally friendly way of growing plants. To ensure the best plant health we do not store our plants in cold storage, but they are left in our field or plant beds until they are ready for packing or collection.
Items marked Br are bare rooted plants grown from cuttings and are typically 1-2 years old.
Availability
Bare rooted plants are only available when the plants are dormant (typically from late November to March).
If a plant is currently out of stock because it is out of season (for example, bare rooted plants in summer) or we have sold out but we are expecting more to be available you can pre-order the plant. We only charge credit/debit cards when an order is despatched, not when an order is placed.
