Cherry Trees
Planting cherry trees seems to have become more popular in recent years, especially for those with a sunny wall or fence to plant against as it is then easier to protect the fruit from birds. Morello does not even need a sunny wall to thrive and birds are less likely to eat them and they make delicious jam and pies. Cherries do best in a moist but well drained, slightly acidic soil. If you need to change the pH of your soil to make it slightly acidic the best product to use is probably Sulphur Chips.
It is important not to prune cherry trees with your other trees in the winter as this may encourage silver-leaf or canker. Prune young trees in the spring when new growth appears and mature trees in the summer.
