Very fast growing, dense, evergreen golden conifer. It will make a splendid specimen tree, columnar with a narrow, dense, conical top. Grows 60-75cm (30ins - 3ft) a year. It makes a good dense hedge and can be kept relatively low and narrow if regularly clipped but do not cut back into the brown wood as it will not re-generate. Leyland Cypress is a hybrid of Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and Nootka cypress (Cupressus nootkatensis). As a hybrid it is almost always sterile, so is propagated mainly by cuttings..
HEDGE Trim in September. Plant 60cm (2ft) apart for 1.8m (6ft) hedge. For taller hedges or screens the planting distance should be about a quarter of the proposed height.
CONIFER 14 x 4.6m (45 x 15ft) in 20 years, ultimate height not yet known, possibly the same as the green form 30m+ (100ft+).

Planting Distances for planting as a Hedge
We recommend planting Leyland Cypress, Golden in a single row between 60cm/2ft apart for 1.8m/6ft Hedge and 1.4m/4.5ft apart for 5.5m/18ft Hedge:
Planting closer will mean the plants will grow together and form a hedge quicker, but requires more plants.
To calculate the number of plants needed for a length of hedging, click on Planting Distance Calculator above.
Planting Guide & RootGrow
We recommend planting with RootGrow. The recommended amount for RootGrow for an order will be shown in your shopping basket.
We will send out a planting guide with your order, you also can find a guide to planting here.
Pruning
Hedging - As a general rule, plants grown for hedging need pruning to encourage side branching. Usually the harder a plant is pruned the bushier it will be. If they are not pruned there is a danger that the hedges will be thin and bare at the base and that the tips of the plants will die back. If the plant is naturally bushy, less or sometimes no pruning will be needed to achieve a dense hedge.
Leyland Cypress, Golden: Prune any straggly or untidy shoots, otherwise no immediate pruning is required.
