A beautiful early flowering, deciduous, spiny, small shrub which provides a good source of early food for bees. Sometimes as early as February the dark pink flower buds appear, opening to clear pink, cup shaped, five petalled flowers with pale yellow stamens. These early flowers, which are 3.5cm (1.4ins) across and provide welcome early colour and appear before the glossy leaves which are 5cm (2ins) long. The main flowering period is March through to May. Edible quince fruits form creating autumn interest, and these fragrant yellow fruits, although smaller and harder than those produced by the 'fruiting quince', cydonia, can be picked and used in jams, jellies or added to apples for pies and crumbles. Thrives in any well drained but moist soil and can be trained against a north, west or east facing wall, or planted as a bushy free standing shrub growing to 1.5m high with the same spread.A very bushy shrub also makes an excellent flowering hedge planted 60cm (2ft) apart. For Quince, Vranja see fruit section. Height 1.5m (5ft), spread 7ft (2.1m)
