APPLE, HEREFORDSHIRE REDSTREAK

Very early variety dating back to early 1600s and thought to be raised by Lord Scudamore of Herefordshire. It produces an excellent cider and helped to establish the reputation of Herefordshire as a cider producing county. It had declined by the 1700s, but one tree was known to have survived. Subsequently many red-streaked apples have been given this name.

Crab apples such as Golden Hornet and John Downie also are good pollinators for all apples. In areas where there are many apple trees already growing it may not be necessary to plant an extra pollinator.
