    VAT is not chargeable on these plants.

Very hardy variety raised in 1947 in Sweden (Katja) introduced in 1966. Cross between James Grieve and Worcester Pearmain. Attractive bright rosy-red fruit, juicy, crisp and pleasant flavour with a hint of strawberries. Regular heavy cropper, may need thinning as setting is very heavy.

Good for eating and juicing, and popular with children. Good pollinator for other varieties. Upright spreading tree which spurs freely. The blossom attracts bees, and later any fallen fruit is eagerly consumed by thrushes and other similar birds. Bullfinches are, unfortunately, partial to the buds.

Pollinators

Apple, Katy is in pollination group 2 (mid season), and requires a pollinator. Choose a pollinator in group 1, 2 or 3, click here for a list of suitable apple trees. Crab apples such as Golden Hornet and John Downie also are good pollinators for all apples. In areas where there are many apple trees already growing it may not be necessary to plant an extra pollinator.

Apple, Katy is available as:

Br = Bare Root Plant

Maiden - A maiden tree is a single stemmed tree which has not been trained so can be trained into whatever form you wish. It typically is between 1-2 metres tall and will have a few side shoots.

Bush - This a maiden tree that has had its main stem cut to encourage branches low to the ground making it easier to pick and maintain.

Half Standard - These will have a clear stem around 80-120cm, with branches above this. They are good as specimen trees in gardens or orchards.

Bare-Root Plants

Bare-root plants are sold without a pot/soil around the roots. This is a more cost effective and environmentally friendly way of growing plants. To ensure the best plant health we do not store our plants in cold storage, but they are left in our field or plant beds until they are ready for packing or collection.

Items marked Br are bare rooted plants grown from cuttings and are typically 1-2 years old.

Availability

Bare rooted plants are only available when the plants are dormant (typically from late November to March).

If a plant is currently out of stock because it is out of season (for example, bare rooted plants in summer) or we have sold out but we are expecting more to be available you can pre-order the plant. We only charge credit/debit cards when an order is despatched, not when an order is placed.

Rootstocks

Rootstocks are used to restrict the vigour of fruit trees and allow a range to grow in a small space. They can also contribute to the disease resisting abilities of the plant.[from RHS - Update]

M26 - A dwarfing rootstock that is suitable for growing Bush, pyramid, spindlebush and espalier trees. Typically fruits after 2 or 3 years and requires staking. Tree spacing 2.4-3.6m (8-12ft) with 4.5m (15ft) between rows. Ultimate height as trained as bush: 2.4-3m (8-10ft) x 3.6m (12ft).

MM106 - A semi-dwarfing rootstock that is suitable for all forms except standards. Typically fruits after 3 or 4 years and requires staking for the first 5 years or tree is established. Tree spacing 6m (20ft). Spacing: 3.6 (12ft) with 4.5m (15ft) between the rows. Ultimate height as trained as bush: 3-4m (10-13ft) x 4m (13ft)
