A variety of Beech of great distinction and beauty. Long, narrow buds open to slender leaves with deeply cut, long, narrow lobes and taper to a fine point. These are green in summer and turn a stunning copper-gold in autumn and persist well into the winter. The tree is pyramidal in early years but is eventually nearly as wide as tall, with branches reaching almost to the ground. R.H.S. Award of Garden Merit in 2002. Very attractive deciduous, classic-shaped, hardy tree for a sunny position, which is drought tolerant when established. The young shoots are woolly silvery-grey, turning darker with age, and the trunk is very dark grey to practically black. This gives a good background to the silver-green leaves with persistent white undersides, which start white with a velvety covering then turn dark red in autumn. Velvety snow-white flowers appear in profusion in spring and are followed by edible small pears which ripen to yellow and have a mildly sour flavour.
