MOUNTAIN ASH (Sorbus aucuparia) (Rowan). Go to Top of Page

Hardy native deciduous tree tolerant of most situations. White flower heads in June, large bunches of orange-red berries in autumn, which are irresistible to birds. The berries can be made into a delicious rowan jelly. Leaves typically have 15 leaflets, green in summer turning orange in autumn.
If you want to incorporate Mountain Ash into your hedge, not only as a tree to stand proud of the hedge, but also as part of the hedge, especially a native hedge. If you want it to be a tree, put a clear tag on the young plant to make sure it is clearly visible and does not get pruned down when the hedge is being trimmed. If you want it as part of the hedge it will enhance the beauty of the hedge and provide blossom in the spring for pollinating insects, then food for wild life in autumn. Simply plant the smallest size available in the hedge and trim in the same way as other plants in the hedge.
TREE 20ft x 10ft (6m x 3m) in 20 years, ultimate height 40ft (12m).
