Deciduous, bushy shrub with fresh red new foliage which turns brown-bronze as it matures. This is held on brown stems which are mahogany red when young, and the main branches peal producing paper-like bark. In summer, round clusters of attractive pale pink appear and they contrast well against the maple-like leaves. The flowers produce bladder-like fruits. The plant is tolerant of poor air quality so is good in urban settings. It is happy in sun or partial shade and should be planted in moist but well drained soil.
