Berberis are a wide range of deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen, densely spiny shrubs grown for their attractive cup-shaped, mainly yellow flowers in spring, and purple or red edible fruits in late summer and autumn. Evergreens have variable but attractive shiny prickly foliage and the deciduous plants usually have very attractive autumn colouring. They require sun or semi-shade and thrive in all but water-logged soil. Many make excellent informal or formal hedges.Berberis Harlequin is a deciduous shrub with small red-purple leaves that are mottled pink, later becoming purple with good autumn colouring. Pale yellow flowers in spring, followed by bright red fruits in autumn.
