Very dense, bushy, evergreen, dwarf hedge with large, leathery, spear-like, shining, dark green leaves and masses of long erect spikes of fragrant white flowers appear in April, and often a second flush in the autumn. The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Also the leaves have extrafloral nectaries on their undersides which honeybees are particularly attracted to. Red, cherry-like fruits ripen to glossy black in autumn. Shade tolerant.
HEDGE Prune with secateurs after flowering. For hedges 60 - 120cm (2 - 4ft). Plant 45cm (1.5ft) apart.
SHRUB 120 x 150cm (4 x 5ft).

Pruning
Hedging - As a general rule, plants grown for hedging need pruning to encourage side branching. Usually the harder a plant is pruned the bushier it will be. If they are not pruned there is a danger that the hedges will be thin and bare at the base and that the tips of the plants will die back. If the plant is naturally bushy, less or sometimes no pruning will be needed to achieve a dense hedge.
Laurel, Dwarf: Prune any straggly or untidy shoots, otherwise no immediate pruning is required.
