Fully hardy evergreen which makes an excellent low, neat, flowering hedge, which we have nick-named 'A Royal Choice' as it has replaced diseased box hedges at Highgrove. Small, dense, dark green leaves with reddish edges with pleasant spicy aroma are topped with many spikes of dainty pink flowers in summer and early autumn. These are attractive to bees. Medicinal plant, traditionally used in knot gardens. Soil neutral to alkaline, in clay soils it may be necessary to work some grit to provide a well-drained soil.
HEDGE Trim flower spikes after flowering and foliage in autumn, can be pruned back to 5cm (2ins) to keep tidy through the winter as the plant quickly grows in the spring and flowers. For hedges 30 - 45cm (12 - 18ins), plant 15 - 23cm (6 - 9ins) apart.
SHRUB 45 x 23cm (18 x 9ins).

Pot Grown Plants
These are normally sold in small 9cm wide pots, unless a different pot size is shown (where the pot size is shown in litres). Pot grown plants can be planted at any time of the year.
Availability
Pot Grown are generally available all year.
If a plant is currently out of stock because it is out of season (for example, bare rooted plants in summer) or we have sold out but we are expecting more to be available you can pre-order the plant. We only charge credit/debit cards when an order is despatched, not when an order is placed.
Planting Distances for planting as a Hedge
We recommend planting Hedge Germander in a single row between 15cm/6ins apart and 23cm/9ins apart:
Planting closer will mean the plants will grow together and form a hedge quicker, but requires more plants.
To calculate the number of plants needed for a length of hedging, click on Planting Distance Calculator above.
Planting Guide & RootGrow
We recommend planting with RootGrow. The recommended amount for RootGrow for an order will be shown in your shopping basket.
We will send out a planting guide with your order, you also can find a guide to planting here.
