Compact evergreen shrub with leathery, spiny, holly-like leaves which emerge dark black-purple slowly turning to dark green. In late summer to early autumn. clusters of tubular, jasmine-like, fragrant, white flowers appear which are loved by bees and which are occasionally followed by blue-black fruits which provide food for birds in winter. It takes well to pruning so can be planted as a hedge about 30cm (1ft) apart, or it makes an attractive plant in a border. For best colour plant in full sun, but is happy in partial shade.
