Vigorous native deciduous tree with dense clusters of pale pink flowers early May followed by green crab apples in autumn suitable for jam, jelly and wine. Any well drained fertile soil. Crab apples are good pollinators for fruiting apples.
If you want to incorporate Crab Apple into your hedge, not only as a tree to stand proud of the hedge, but also as part of the hedge, especially a native hedge. If you want it to be a tree, put a clear tag on the young plant to make sure it is clearly visible and does not get pruned down when the hedge is being trimmed. If you want it as part of the hedge it will enhance the beauty of the hedge and provide blossom in the spring for pollinating insects, then food for wild life in autumn. Simply plant the smallest size available in the hedge and trim in the same way as other plants in the hedge.
TREE 25ft x 15ft (7.6m x 4.6m) in 20 years, ultimate height 35ft (11m).
