Fast growing evergreen with very attractive, large, leathery leaves metallic grey-green above and silver underneath but are almost entirely silver when young. Many inconspicuous but intensely fragrant, bell-shaped, silvery flowers appear in clusters in October and November and these are followed by small egg-shaped orange or red fruits in spring. These are edible and are known as Wild Olives and are popular in south-eastern Europe. Ideal for shady, windy or seaside positions, but not cold or wet situations.HEDGE Trim in spring. Large, ornamental, conifer with horizontal branches arranged in tiers and clothed to the ground. Large cones held upwards on the top of branches. Native shrub with dense, dark green shoots and vicious spines giving the appearance of an evergreen. From March to May and often late summer a dazzling feast of colour is given by the fragrant pea-like vibrant yellow flowers. Thrives in poor, dry acid soils, but suitable for any well drained soil. Fully hardy evergreen which makes an excellent low, neat, flowering hedge, which we have nick-named 'Charlie's Choice' as it has replaced diseased box hedges at Highgrove. Small, dense, dark green leaves with reddish edges with pleasant spicy aroma are topped with many spikes of dainty pink flowers in summer and early autumn. Medicinal plant, traditionally used in knot gardens. In appearance similar to Box and may be used as a substitute if Box Blight may prove to be a problem. 'Dark Green' is a more robust form of Box-Leafed Holly with glossy, small, dark green leaves. This slow growing, compact, evergreen shrub has, not surprisingly, been awarded the R.H.S. Award of Garden Merit. Its distinctive brown stems are covered with small, glossy, oval leaves which are golden-yellow with splashes of green in spring, then turning lime-green and yellow in summer. The colour is more intense if planted in full sun but the plant is tolerant of shade but the colours will be less vibrant. Its bushy habit make it ideal for a dwarf hedge, but it also makes an attractive small specimen shrub. Very dense, bushy fast growing evergreen plant with masses of tiny leaves, dissimilar in appearance to climbing honeysuckle. In March and May small creamy-white flowers appear followed by a few purple-blue berries. In favourable conditions many of these attractive berries will be produced but generally they will be sparce.
