New Range of Ferns

Exciting new items in this include a collection of ferns. Ferns are such useful plants in the garden and their good properties are becoming more widely known again. They were widely used in Victorian Gardens both outside and in conservatory displays and many rare varieties were highly prized, but then became less and less popular. However, gardeners today are rediscovering their values and we are pleased to offer five varieties for despatch by mail order, but for those who live locally there are about forty other interesting varieties available.

More Grasses

We have introduced four more grasses to these ever more popular plants, but again if you are able to call at the Garden Centre there is a wonderful display of about seventy more varieties for you to choose from, plus a dozen or so bamboos.

New Hedging Plants

I think the plant we are most excited about introducing this year is Box Green Balloon. We had heard about this and when we saw the nursery bed with the near perfect untrimmed balls we were sure you would be equally impressed! We photographed the nursery bed and have put this in the catalogue. Some pot grown plants are already available but the ball rooted plants due in shortly will be a better shape immediately. We have also added the variety Faulkner to the box we already offer. Faulkner has a larger leaf than Common Box and has an even denser habit, but possibly its most useful attribute for some gardeners is that it is very frost resistant. As many may have found out Common Box does occasionally get frost damage in the spring which catches the new growth and makes it very unsightly for a while, so if you are in a frost pocket it is better to plant Faulkner (Buxus microphylla Faulkner).

Other new introductions are Berberis Julianae, which makes a very dense, prickly evergreen hedge, Holly Golden King, again a prickly evergreen which despite its name is a female and will bear bright red berries if pollinated. Another Holly is J C van Tol, a self-fertile form with nearly spine free dark green leaves.

When you look through the catalogue all the new introductions are marked so you can spot them easily. There are many others in all sections of the catalogue. Many of the pot grown plants listed in the catalogue are now available for collection or dispatch.

New Faces in the Plants Office

On the Garden Centre the big news is a change of staff in the Plant Information Area. Susan, who had been with us for eleven years has moved on! As many of you were aware she is a very talented garden designer, having won silver with her first garden design she and Charlotte did at Hampton Court. She and Charlotte, who also worked part time with us, have set up their own garden design company. We still see them frequently coming in for plants and we wish them every good fortune in their new enterprise.

In their place have stepped Chris Day and Claire Jones. Chris's whole working life has been in the world of horticulture. After training he joined the All in One Garden Centre and gained experience there. He then branched out into journalism and broadcasting and had a successful career, launching his own Magazine. We met him in his capacity of editor of Garden Ideas (now Gardens Monthly) when he organised an article about planting bare rooted hedging plants. We are now delighted to rescue him from the pressurised world of editing with constant deadlines to meet, and welcome him to the world of retailing where a different challenges will meet him.

As Buckingham Horticultural Society have already learnt he is an excellent presenter. He is already getting more bookings for presentations here in the evening and has ideas for daytime presentations next spring. If you are looking for an outing for your society do give Chris a ring.

Autumn Bulbs

For those visiting the Garden Centre at the moment, the range of bulbs is vast and varieties I think may be of particular interest are the 25kg, 7kg or 3kg bags of mixed daffodils and narcissus. If you are looking for an attractive present we have some traditional blue and white bowls with either hyacinth, crocus or tulips, plus compost and white chippings all in a presentation sleeve for £3.99. If you are looking for cyclamen hederifolium (ex neopolitanum) do make sure they are from cultivated stock as they are still being taken from the wild thus devastating wild stock.

Autumn Lawn & Timber Treatments

For lovers of good lawns, now is the best time to improve the roots of the lawn, so the lawn is really good in the spring. To do this treat with 'Evergreen Autumn' now, especially as the price is good at £19.99 for 400 square metre pack.

The rain has just started but you will still have time to treat any timber before winter really sets in. There is, of course, a wide range of different wood preservatives available to suit different tastes. At the moment we have a multi-buy promotion available on creosote, a traditional product many people like to use and which we do not know how much longer will be available. If you wish to buy stock whilst it is still on the shelf we have 4 litres of the traditional dark creosote for £3.69 or 3 x 4 litres for £9.00.

Chimenea Special Offers

Avery useful and ornamental piece of garden equipment is a chimenea. These really do give out an enormous amount of heat and some can also be used to cook on. In the mosquito season they also act as a deterrent to those little beasties! At the moment we have some real bargains available, for example a 105cm La Hacienda Mexican clay chimenea plus stand for £99.99 (usually £169.99), or a cast iron model 134 cm high again at £99.99 (usually £169.99). If you have a smaller garden (or budget) we have some smaller ones for as little as £29.99. There is a good display of them at the entrance to the shop at the moment.

That is the news for the moment. All the bare root stock will be coming in shortly, so if you are thinking of planting a hedge or other bare root plants, do get out now and prepare the ground as conditions are ideal. Happy Gardening!
