New 2000-2001 Catalogue
This year has gone flying by and it seems like only last week I wrote the last
Newsletter, but I see it was in fact done in July. Since then we have been busy
preparing our 2000-2001 Catalogue. For those who are not familiar with the catalogue,
it lists most of the many bare rooted plants we sell between November and March.
These are mainly hedging plants and young trees. There are also climbers, ground
cover plants, ornamental trees and shrubs, fruit trees, soft fruit plus useful
gardening sundries such as ground cover material, tree shelters, rabbit guards
etc. Any of the items listed in the catalogue are available for collection from
the Garden Centre or for despatch throughout this country and even to some European
destinations by our mail order service.
Our catalogue is also available on-line at www.hedging.co.uk
We had not realised how much information there is in the catalogue until we split
it all up to get it onto the web!

Great Value Composters
Great news for those wanting to make their own compost. We have available now
Blackwall 330 and 220 litre composters at £15 and £10 each respectively.
The normal retail price of these compost bins is £49.95 and £39.95.
This offer would not be possible without support of the scheme by Aylesbury Vale
who are subsidising this offer in order to try to decrease the amount of waste
which is being sent to landfill sites. Up to 30% of the 44,000 tonnes of domestic
waste created within the District and disposed of through landfill is, in fact,
organic and could be recycled to produce nutritious compost.
The composters are being offered through three Garden Centres in Aylesbury Vale,
ourselves in the north, World's End in Wendover and Haddenham Garden Centre in
the south. Not only are the converters available at 'give away' prices, but there
are also Compost Aerators at £4.95 (rrp £9.95), Biotal Activator at
£4.95 (rrp £7.15) and really useful lidded, handled kitchen bins to
collect your kitchen waste in at only £4.95 (rrp £6.95) The offer
is only available for a limited period, so take advantage now!

Autumn Planting Bulbs
The furniture season is now behind us and the shop is shelved again to take all
the thousands of autumn planting bulbs. There are some exciting offers amongst
these, for instance 10kg bags of mixed daffodils and narcissi at £9.99,
10kg bags of King Alfreds again at £9.99 or 4½kg bags at £4.99.
For those needing even larger quantities we do, as usual, have 25kg bags available.
Another good value line is collections of bulbs at £1.99. For instance 25
narcissi, 60 specie crocus, 40 Tête à Tête daffodils and 35
Dutch crocus. For those looking for something a little more unusual a few worth
considering are Fritillaria Golden Flag, Calochortus, Dichelostemma, 'White' Camassia
or Hyacinth Woodstock, a really deep red.

Recommended Plants
Out amongst the plants the autumn colouring is starting to show, and there are
so many plants in flower and looking wonderful. If your garden is lacking colour
at the moment it might be worth your while to come and look at some of our displays
to give you inspiration. A well designed garden should be a joy all year round,
so to help those who do not know their plants that well we try to have a seasonal
display of plants on show all the year round.
It is always difficult to know what plants to mention to you, but now is a good
time to add extra perennials to your garden as they are available again in 9cm
pots at prices from £1.65. In summer they need to be in larger pots which
means the price is considerably higher. There is also a good range of bamboos
and these range in size and price from £3.99 up to larger specimens in 15
litre pots at approximately £39.
One tree which catches so many customers' eyes at the moment is the new Dawn
Redwood, Metasequoia glyptostroboides Gold Rush. Its brilliant feathery golden
foliage is truly outstanding, and as it will only reach 5 metres in 20 years it
is practical for a large garden. For those who enjoy the qualities of the Hebe
family, we have two new varieties available, Silver Dollar which is a sport of
the well known Red Edge, and Purple Shamrock which boasts of the unusual quality
that its new foliage appears purple, and this becomes variegated as it matures.

Plant Protection: Mini-Greenhouses
For those looking for protection for some plants during the winter, we have available
again the four shelf Multi-grow at £39.99. They stand against a wall and
have a plastic cover which opens at the front. These were very popular last season.
A new line we are stocking this autumn is the Halls Supreme Wall Garden. This
is a new concept of the traditional lean-to greenhouse, but instead of a side
section, an end section is used. This must sound rather odd, but to show you how
attractive it is a show model of this most practical house will be on display
very shortly so look out for it when you next visit us. It is 6ft wide and only
2ft deep, but because of the many shelves its capacity is far more than one would
expect.

New Range of Garden Buildings
We shall very soon be taking on the Dandf (British despite its name) range of
garden building, decking and arches, and to make room for them we need to clear
some of our existing show buildings. On offer (there is only one, so first come
first served!) is our show model Highly Summerhouse. The normal recommended price
is for this is £632 but this show model is available at £474. Summer
houses are often used to store the garden furniture in the wet winter days, but
if you do not have anywhere to over winter your furniture it is a good idea to
invest in a purpose made furniture cover, as this will lengthen its life considerably.

Autumn Lawn Care
For those who like to manicure their lawn, this is the time to apply an autumn
dressing. With this in mind we have a good stock of Evergreen Autumn (as it is
now called) at only £19.99 for a bag containing enough for 400 square metres.
This kills moss and strengthens the roots so that the grass will get off to a
good start next year. We also have good stocks of turf dressing compost and grass
seed. If you have bare or thin patches on your lawn now is the time to re-seed.

Feeding Wild Birds
At this time of the year, and of course during the winter, it is particularly
important to have a good supply of food available for the birds. For those with
coloured ceramic pots already in their gardens we have a new range range of bird
feeders to complement these. They are a little more expensive than others, but
at £15.50 they could make very good presents. As normal we have a good stock
of different bird food, some prepacked and some loose, and you may be amused to
read that we now have an intelligent robin who pops into the shop to help himself
from the seed bins. We do have a good supply outside for the birds but this little
one has his exclusive supply!

Apple Day at Sulgrave Manor
And finally a date for your diary - Apple Day at Sulgrave Manor on the 21nd and 22rd October.
This year it will be taking on a new attraction as there will be a Farmers' Market
there as well. As we have been going for so many years I assume everyone knows
about 'Apple Day' but talking to the gardening correspondent of the Daily Telegraph
the other week I was astounded to find out that he was unaware of this marvellous
event where you can buy delicious English Apples, take your unknown variety of
apple for identification, inspect many weird and wonderful varieties, browse in
recipe books, watch cooking demonstrations etc. etc. If you have not visited the
event before we would thoroughly recommend it.
