Evergreen conifer, with dense spreading branches, fast growing when young. Trunk, long but seldom quite vertical. Needles dark blackish-green, dense and tufty. Cones conical, dark grey-brown and up to 3 inches (8cm) long. Any soil, especially chalk and limestone, and suitable for dry, exposed and maritime sites where it excels.
