Dense, fast-growing deciduous plant with glossy bright green heartshaped leaves. Yellow-brown catkins in spring before the leaves appear, followed in autumn by large false cones which are good bird food. Ideal for wet situations and thrives on chalk soils. HEDGE Trim July or August. For hedges 6ft (1.8m) or more. Plant 2ft (60cm) apart. TREE 45ft x 18ft (14m x 5.5m) in 20 years, ultimate height 80ft (24m).
