JAPANESE MAPLES (Acer palmatum). Go to Top of Page

Very ornamental, slow growing, small deciduous trees or small to medium size bushes which need a sheltered position protected from cold winds, especially from the east. They make perfect specimens for virtually any garden, are generally pest free, disease resistant and heat and humidity tolerant, and as their beauty increases with age, to plant one or more is a worthwhile lifetime investment.
To prevent leaf scorch to their filigree leaves plant in a position out of the early morning sun. Acers prefer a rich soil which is acidic to neutral, moist but free draining. If planting in a container an ericaceous compost or John Innes No. 3 is best used. Tiny purple-red flowers are produced in spring, these being followed by red winged fruits in late summer. JAPANESE QUINCE, PINK LADY (Chaenomeles superba Pink Lady). Award of Garden MeritGo to Top of Page

A beautiful early flowering, deciduous, spiny, small shrub which provides a good source of early food for bees. Sometimes as early as February the dark pink flower buds appear, opening to clear pink, cup shaped, five petalled flowers with pale yellow stamens. These early flowers, which are 3.5cm across and provide welcome early colour and appear before the glossy leaves which are 5cm long. The main flowering period is March through to May. Edible quince fruits form creating autumn interest, and these fragrant yellow fruits, although smaller and harder than those produced by the 'fruiting quince', cydonia, can be picked and used in jams, jellies or added to apples for pies and crumbles. Thrives in any well drained but moist soil and can be trained against a north, west or east facing wall, or planted as a bushy free standing shrub growing to 1.5m high with the same spread. A very bushy shrub also makes an excellent flowering hedge planted 2ft (60cm) apart. For Quince, Vranja see fruit section. Height 5ft (1.5m), spread 7ft (2.1m)

Shrub Collections

Soft Hues Collection. Go to Top of Page

A wonderful selection of deciduous plants which will give interest with flowers or foliage all year. In late winter into spring the first flowers to open will be on the Winter Honeysuckle with its 3/4 inch (2cm) long, scented, creamy-white flowers. Then will follow the snowy-white flowers and attractive spring leaf colouring of the Amelanchier, followed by the very many clusters of pale-pink flowers of Myrobalan Plum
In summer the air will be filled with the delicious fragrance of the Mock Orange (Philadelphus Coronarius). In the autumn, the leaves of the Amelanchier will give hues of red, orange and yellow, then all will fall to let the dainty white tinged pink heavily-scented flowers of the Viburnum fragrans show their beauty throughout the winter days.
A collection of 5 plants covers a length of approximately 3m (10ft)

Evergreen and Ever-Interesting Collection. Go to Top of Page

Many evergreen hedges/screens, especially some varieties of conifers, have little seasonal change, but this collection will give contrasts and interest throughout the year.
In May the Berberis darwinii will burst into flower with its rich orange flowers, closely followed by the large bunches of white flowers on the Cotoneaster franchetii which are particularly attractive to bees. Then in June Pyracantha Orange Glow will produce many clusters of white flowers which contrast well against the shiny dark green leaves.
All the year the Photinia fraseri Red Robin will enliven the hedge with its splashes of red on the new foliage. Come autumn, bunches of bright orange berries will be found on the Pyracantha, red berries on the Cotoneaster and blue-black barberries on the Berberis. The barberries you can eat or leave for food for wildlife; and eventually all the other berries will provide more food for birds. During the winter months Viburnum tinus will be displaying its flat heads of white flowers which have opened from pink buds.
We may occasionally substitute equally suitable plants in this collection. A collection of 5 plants covers a length of approximately 3.5m (10ft).
