Hardy, slow growing, eventually forming a large round-headed native deciduous tree with acorns on long stems in autumn. Good in hedgerows as it usually produces tap roots in early life, so it does not rob the surrounding plants of moisture and nutrients. Although it produces a broad crown, it does not prevent the hedge from growing well in its shade. Will become home to a copious number of insects and species of wildlife. Very long-lived, up to 200 years. Any ordinary well drained soil, tolerant of clay, produces best quality timber on heavy soil.

Possibly the most majestic evergreen tree in the British Isles. Leathery green leaves, dark and glossy above, downy beneath, sometimes toothed, but very variable in form. Responds well to clipping thus making an excellent hedge especially in coastal areas, where it thrives and will form a stiff, wind resistant hedge. Not suitable for very cold inland areas, and will need some protection from the cold when young. Also suitable for adding to a mixed hedge.

Hardy fast growing deciduous tree with broad spreading head. 8 inch (20cm) long leaves, opening pale yellow, turning green in summer then brilliant colours in autumn from yellow to dark red. Any ordinary well drained soil and needs an open sunny position to develop a good shape. Acorns take 2 years to mature.

Large, slow growing, native, deciduous tree which thrives in the less fertile, wetter, northern and western upland regions, and in maritime positions. Spreading habit, with ridged grey bark and yellow stemmed, dark green, large glossy leaves. Stubby acorns with no stalks appear in autumn.

Compact evergreen shrub which makes an excellent hedge if not exposed to strong north or east winds. Leaves dark and shiny above and silver underneath. In early to mid-spring it will produce masses of clusters of tubular white flowers which fill the air with their delicious fragrance. Any fertile well drained soil. Sun or partial shade.

Medium-sized, columnar, deciduous tree, occasionally thorny, with glossy green leaves which often colour well in autumn. In early spring it is covered by a snowfall of white blossom, sometimes tinged pink, then setting small edible fruits for autumn. It suckers freely so is excellent planted in a hedgerow as a small tree. Long cultivated in Great Britain, but unfortunately not common today. Very free flowering, deciduous plant clothed with a profusion of extremely fragrant, creamy-white, cup-shaped single flowers in June and July. Thrives in dry soil, and is suitable for sun or shade. Forms a large informal hedge which will fill the air with fragrance when in flower, or, as a single specimen, will make an attractive shrub.

Spectacular evergreen with glossy, dark green, leathery leaves and new growth brilliant red giving a stunning display especially in the spring. The new growth turns to bronze by late spring then to green, but all new flushes of growth throughout the growing season are brilliant red. Clusters of small white flowers in spring. Any reasonable soil but not extremely alkaline. Protect plants from severe cold during first winters.

Evergreen conifer, with dense spreading branches, fast growing when young. Trunk, long but seldom quite vertical. Needles dark blackish-green, dense and tufty. Cones conical, dark grey-brown and up to 3 inches (8cm) long. Any soil, especially chalk and limestone, and suitable for dry, exposed and maritime sites where it excels.
CONIFER 35ft x 20ft (11m x 6m) in 20 years, ultimate height 90ft (27m).

Similar to Austrian Pine but with a more open habit and has a straight main stem. Good evergreen forestry tree happy in most soils or situations, except high elevations. Suitable for maritime areas.
CONIFER 40ft x 20ft (12m x 6m) in 20 years, ultimate height 100ft (30m).

Very frost hardy, evergreen, fast growing, native conifer with long, soft grey-green needles. Flaky red-brown or orange bark in the upper crown, purple-grey at the base. Very attractive pine with foliage contrasting with the colourful bark. Tolerant of exposed, but not maritime positions. Cones are slim, green at first, ripening to brown. Any soil including poor infertile soil.
CONIFER 35ft x 15ft (11m x 4.6m) in 20 years, ultimate height 80ft (24m).

Masses of pure white flowers smother the branches in early March before the leaves appear and these are followed in autumn by tasty red or yellow, spherical cherry-plums on mature plants. It will form a dense deciduous hedge and its thorny twigs will make it an effective barrier.

Dark red foliage changing to deep purple on purple stems, contrasting dramatically with masses of pink flowers in March and April. It will form a dense deciduous hedge and can be very effective if mixed with Myrobalan Plum.

Fast growing, wind tolerant deciduous tree with straight trunk to summit. Young leaves coppery-red turning to glossy bright green then yellow in autumn. Good screening tree. Any ordinary soil, except badly drained.

Broad heart-shaped leaves fill the air with strong balsam scent in spring. When young they are outstandingly variegated creamy-white and pink, slowly turning to green, but this variegation often does not appear in the first years after transplanting. Prune hard in February to obtain best variegation. Deciduous.

Very attractive, fast growing tree. Woolly shoots are white all winter, and new leaves unfurl furry, the fur rubbing off the shiny, grey-green upper surface, but the white bloom remains on the undersurface all season. Salt and chalk tolerant and good in exposed sites.

Very colourful, compact, low, bushy, native, deciduous plant. Masses of bright buttercup-yellow, saucer-shaped flowers, 1 inch (2.5cm) across, from late spring to mid-autumn over dark green leaves. Makes a very colourful informal hedge. Will thrive in poor to moderately fertile well drained soil in full sun.
