OAK, ENGLISH or COMMON (Quercus robur) (Pedunculate Oak). Go to Top of Page

Hardy, slow growing, eventually forming a large round-headed native deciduous tree with acorns on long stems in autumn. Good in hedgerows as it usually produces tap roots in early life, so it does not rob the surrounding plants of moisture and nutrients. Although it produces a broad crown, it does not prevent the hedge from growing well in its shade. Will become home to a copious number of insects and species of wildlife. Very long-lived, up to 200 years. Any ordinary well drained soil, tolerant of clay, produces best quality timber on heavy soil.
TREE 15ft x 8ft (4.6m x 2.4m) in 20 years, ultimate height 100ft (30m).

OAK, HOLM or EVERGREEN (Quercus ilex). Go to Top of Page

Possibly the most majestic evergreen tree in the British Isles. Leathery green leaves, dark and glossy above, downy beneath, sometimes toothed, but very variable in form. Responds well to clipping thus making an excellent hedge especially in coastal areas, where it thrives and will form a stiff, wind resistant hedge. Not suitable for very cold inland areas, and will need some protection from the cold when young. Also suitable for adding to a mixed hedge.
HEDGE Trim in winter. For hedges 4-10ft (1.2-3m). Plant 2ft (60cm) apart.
TREE 15-20ft x 10-15ft (4.6-6m x 3-4.6m) in 20 years, ultimate height 80ft (24m).

PEAR, COMMON (Pyrus communis). Go to Top of Page

Medium-sized, columnar, deciduous tree, occasionally thorny, with glossy green leaves which often colour well in autumn. In early spring it is covered by a snowfall of white blossom, sometimes tinged pink, then setting small edible fruits for autumn. It suckers freely so is excellent planted in a hedgerow as a small tree. Long cultivated in Great Britain, but unfortunately not common today. For more ornamental varieties see Pear Chanticleer or Weeping Silver Pear, and for fruiting varieties see the fruit section.

PHOTINIA CRUNCHY (Photinia serratifolia Crunchy). NewGo to Top of Page

An outstanding new variety, similar to Photinia Red Robin, but with very attractive, upright, finely toothed, undulating, rich coppery purple, shiny, evergreen foliage. The new foliage throughout the season is brighter in tone and the older foliage slowly takes on shades of green. Leaves are on bright coppery young shoot, which slowly fade through chocolate to green. The colours of this variety are more subtle than the very showy Red Robin. Delicate panicles of white flowers appear in late spring contrasting well against the foliage. Naturally a dense, well branched plant so is ideal for hedging or to be grown as a specimen plant. Plant in any reasonable well drained soil in sun or partial shade and protect from cold winds until established.
HEDGE Trim in spring. For hedges 6ft (1.8m). Plant 2-3ft (60-90cm) apart.
SHRUB 8ft x 6ft (2.4m x 1.8m).
