Berberis thunbergii Bagatelle (Japanese Barberry). Award of Garden MeritGo to Top of Page

A useful deciduous dwarf shrub with a distinct rounded habit - perfect for filling those fronts of borders. The dark red foliage contrasts with the rich yellow flowers in spring followed by a wonderful firework display of brilliant autumn colours. Not too fussy about soil so long has it is well-worked with some organic material added to help retain moisture to aid root establishment. Location - sun or light shade. Height and spread 18-24ins (45-60cm).

Brachyglottis Sunshine (Syn. Senecio Sunshine) (Daisy Flower). Award of Garden MeritGo to Top of Page

An attractive evergreen garden shrub with downy silver leaves making it very tolerant of drought once established. From mid-summer it is smothered in vivid yellow daisy-like flowers. An excellent plant for the garden with its bold flowers and subtle, silver leaf colour. This shrub needs well-drained soil and plenty of sun to flourish. Prune to shape after flowering. Height 3ft (1m), spread 4ft (1.2m).

Caryopteris incana Sunshine Blue (Caryopteris incana Jason). Go to Top of Page

A tough, golden golden-leaved deciduous shrub which contrasts effectively with its dark amethyst blue flowers produced abundantly throughout the summer and into autumn. The aromatic foliage is a bonus to a shrub that works well in mixed as well as shrub borders. Prefers well-drained soil in full sun for best leaf colour and flower production. In cold exposed gardens consider working it against the protection of a warm south or west-facing wall or fence. Height 5ft (1.5m), spread 3-5ft (1-1.5m) in 10 years. Ultimate height is currently not known.

Choisya Goldfingers (Mexican Orange Blossom Goldfingers) (Choisya Limo). Go to Top of Page

This plant has very fine aromatic golden leaves and in spring may produce sweet-smelling white flowers, although it is predominately grown for its striking foliage. The plant forms a dense evergreen mound, which makes an excellent addition to any garden. Grow in well-drained soil in sun, although it will tolerate some shade. Prune to shape in autumn. Height and spread 5ft (1.5m).

Clerodendron bungei Pink Diamond (Pink Diamond Glory Flower). Go to Top of Page

This vibrant garden sub-shrub has interesting, heart-shaped foliage with variegated pink, green and white colouration. During summer months sweet smelling red flowers add even more interest. It would make a fantastic and unusual addition to any garden. Requires moist but well-drained soil and is best in full sun or light shade. Prune annually in spring back to a basic framework. Height 6ft (2m), spread 6ft (2m).

Convolvulus cneorum. Award of Garden MeritGo to Top of Page

A compact rounded bushy evergreen shrub with lance-shaped silky silver-green leaves. In May through to July it is smothered in 2 inch (5cm) wide, open funnel-shaped white flowers with a yellow centre. A close relation of bindweed but with a very different habit it will create a low silver hummock which holds its leaves in all but the harshest winters with the added advantage of the bindweed-like flowers. A very manageable shrub, requiring little maintenance except deadheading after flowering. Height 2ft (60cm), spread 3ft (90cm).

Euonymus fortunei Blond (Evergreen Bittersweet) (Euonymus fortunei Interbolwi). Go to Top of Page

Bold yellow splash and fresh green foliage makes this variegated evergreen most useful in all aspects of garden planting.
Highly versatile and easy to grow, ideal for banks, front of borders and shady areas. Best of all, it looks great in decorative in pots, being compact in habit. Not fussy about soil and it grows well both sun and light shade. Harmful if eaten. Height 15ins (40cm), spread 24ins (60cm).

The open sterile florets of lacecap hydrangeas are a must in the summer garden so do not miss out on this gorgeous lacecap hydrangea variety which produces intense purple-pink florets which are held well above the mid-green deciduous foliage. Lacecaps grow well in sun or partial shade, so long as the soil is well-drained. Height and spread 6.5ft (2m).

This is a dense bushy shrub with dark green leaves, which hold in all but the harshest winters. In midsummer it is smothered in large, brilliant golden-yellow cup shaped flowers, which continue through to autumn. Can be grown effectively in a large pot or in a border. Requires sun but will tolerate light shade. Remove dead heads after flowering and trim to shape. Height 4ft (1.2m), spread 5ft (1.5m).

Prunus laurocerasus Etna (Etna Laurel) (Prunus laurocerasus Anbri). Go to Top of Page

An excellent foil in a border with lustrous green foliage, which sets off other plants beautifully. It has the added attraction of bronzy-orange new growth throughout spring and summer, which contrasts well with its shiny green older leaves. In spring it is covered in spikes of scented white flowers. Excellent in sun or shade and grows well in most garden soils. It can be kept trimmed and is often used for hedging. Prune to shape in spring after flowering. If unpruned it makes a large evergreen shrub for the back of a border. Height 8ft (2.5m), spread 6ft (2m).

Rhus typhina Tiger Eyes (Golden Sumach) (Rhus typhina Balitiger). Go to Top of Page

A new and ultra compact form of rhus, perfect for smaller garden where space is limited or for growing in pots, where its spectacular autumn foliage can be admired. This is a dwarf variety that is said to be less invasive than the common sumach. The foliage which is finely divided is bright golden yellow, turning orange and red at leaf fall. It looks particularly good when used as a focal point in the mixed border or shrubbery. Its dwarf growth habit means it is also useful for large containers. Foliage does not scorch in summer. Plant in a full sun and in moist, well-drained light soils. Height 6ft (1.8m), spread 10ft (3m).

A magnificent Hybrid Tea rose with large magenta pink flowers produced in good numbers throughout the summer on sturdy, disease-resistant red-green stems. Compact habit - plants reach no more than 3ft (1m) tall. All roses enjoy a well-prepared soil, deeply worked with generous amounts of compost or well-rotted manure. Deciduous.

Bred by Kordes and introduced in 2005, 'Reminiscence' is lovely yellow flowered floribunda rose with some fragrance. Repeat-flowering and good diseases resistance, this rose produces good-sized blooms set against glossy deciduous foliage. Plants are ideal for mixed borders, small and large beds, growing to 3ft (1m) high. All roses enjoy a well-prepared soil, deeply worked with generous amounts of compost or well-rotted manure.

Bred at the famous Kordes stable, 'Summer Memories' produces neatly formed creamy-white floribunda blooms over a long flowering season commencing mid-June onwards. The flowers are fragrant and contrast with the dark green, glossy deciduous foliage. Plants grow no taller than 3ft (1m). The relative compactness of this variety makes it useful in both mixed and larger borders. All roses enjoy a well-prepared soil, deeply worked with generous amounts of compost or well-rotted manure.

An English climbing rose from Kordes which is ideal for south-facing walls, pillars, arches and pergolas, where you can enjoy the vibrant red blooms set against large, glossy green deciduous foliage. The blooms are slightly perfumed and can be enjoyed from late spring until the first frosts. All roses enjoy a well-prepared soil, deeply worked with generous amounts of compost or well-rotted manure. Height 7ft (2.1m).

A bold splash of yellow throughout summer and into autumn, this near leaf-less plant is excellent in drought conditions and is covered in fragrant yellow pea-like flowers for much of the growing season. Makes an excellent shrub for a sheltered border or against a wall or fence. Give protection from rabbits when young. Needs full sun and well-drained soil. Remove untidy shoots in spring and prune to shape and size. Height 10ft (3m), spread 10ft (3m).

A slow growing Lilac with dark green, wavy edged leaves. In May and June it is smothered in open clusters of pale mauve flowers which have a spicy clove-like scent. The leaves may take a purple hue in autumn before falling. Red-brown coloured stems give additional winter interest. An excellent plant for a specimen in a rock garden due to its height or in a mixed border where it can be left to grow. Plant in rich well-drained soil in sun or shade. Prune to shape after flowering. Height 6ft (2m), spread 5ft (1.5m).

The deep bronze-green foliage of this deciduous shrub contrasts beautifully with the dark-pink funnel shaped flowers in late spring and early summer. This garden classic adds a touch of drama to any border and will team up wonderfully with plants in a hot border or in woodland setting and everywhere in between. Happy in any garden soil and sun or semi-shade but will colour better in full sun. Trim back shoots after flowering to encourage dense healthy growth.
